Entheos (ἔνθεος, as it is written in Greek) is a word which means, literally, “the god within.” It is the root of the English word “enthusiasm” and is, we believe, at the heart of the Burning Man principle of Immediacy.
The Burning Man Organization describes Immediacy as follows: “Immediate experience is, in many ways, the most important touchstone of value in our culture. We seek to overcome barriers that stand between us and a recognition of our inner selves, the reality of those around us, participation in society, and contact with a natural world exceeding human powers. No idea can substitute for this experience.” By entheos we are not referencing a religion, faith or creed, rather we are pointing to recognition of your own divinity and to the divinity of others, that you are a creative being and that we are collaboratively creative in community with each other. This idea is the guiding light of our Burning Man theme camp, where together we build an interactive space of creativity (ritual, music, dance, art, fire, food and shamanic ceremony) where others may discover and contribute their own ἔνθεος.
